The group is only 9 students, and each person has two 5 foot table to work on. The format is similar to my sew labs where each person works on her own projects and schedule. We will have Show and Tell and some lessons, but the level of sewing is as intense or as relaxed as you choose.
Below are a few words from women who have been to one of my sewing retreats
- "I look forward to going on my sewing "retreat" to Asilomar every year. It is so wonderful to be able to do the thing I love as long as I want every day with lovely people and an excellent instructor. I love the low-key atmosphere of Asilomar, being by the ocean, and the excellent food I don't have to prepare! "
- Spending time with Jane at Asilomar is both stimulating and relaxing. Jane continues to challenge our perceptions, stretch our design aesthetics, and encourages us to explore or invent new techniques.
- It goes without saying that Jane is a very special sewing and design instructor. Having her help you with your sewing for several days is an unbelievable treat, and I feel very fortunate to be able to attend. I feel I accomplish a lot that I couldn't have done on my own, and at the same time have gained skills that will help me on future projects. Besides the positive sewing experience, I love being with the fun group of women attending these retreats. And the group synergy is inspiring.

Shoreline on Monterey Peninsula, CA
Jane Foster's sewing retreat is held on the Asilomar Retreat and Conference Grounds on the shoreline of the Monterey Peninsula in California. Asilomar occupies 107 acres with housing for 312 people, a dining room, and conference rooms. It is part of the California state park system, and is run by a concession. Students are able to sew, design garments, relax, take walks, visit the tide pools, shop, and socialize with friends. The beach, flora, tide pools and ocean are magnificent and just a few minutes walk away. Usually the students arrange to take an afternoon side trip to shop in the local fabric or knitting stores in Pacific Grove and Carmel. A great favorite in Pacific Grove is Back Porch Fabrics. While it is mainly a quilting store, the owner has great taste, and usually you will find something in the store you really must purchase. Carmel and all its shopping is only about a 5 or 10 minute drive away.

Students coming to Jane's sewing retreats bring their sewing machines and work on projects that yearn to be started or finished. Asilomar provides a room for sewing, and students enjoy the time without interruptions from TV or telephone calls. This is a sewing retreat and sewing vacation all rolled up into one wonderful and fun event.
Jane is an excellent sewing instructor with years of experience. She has exceptional talent in the designing and fitting of garments. She emphasizes color choices and garment lines that compliment each person. The class size is usually 9 students. Some students are early risers and sew on their own before breakfast. After breakfast Jane helps students with their projects for 3 hours, and then everyone breaks for lunch. After lunch there will be free time to sew or go on an outing. At 4:00 PM Jane again helps individual students until dinner, and then again after dinner. So each student has ample individual attention throughout the entire sewing retreat.
Meals are served in the dining room, and the food is wonderful and plentiful. You can choose between the normal entre or a vegetarian entre. The grounds are beautiful and quiet, and the ocean is across the street. The rooms are simple but clean. They have single beds, and are without TV's, radios, phones, or clocks. However, some of the rooms will have a balcony with seating for you to experience the quiet. There is a gift shop with tee shirts, sweat shirts, and souvenirs. The coffee shop has great coffee, bottled water, wine, beer, a few choices of light meals or snacks, and is located just a short walk from our sewing room.
These events are SO successful. Call Jane now to reserve a space in the next sewing retreat. The sewing retreats and vacations can fill up quickly. Students from past years are eager to come again.
The Asilomar Conference grounds are a great place to take a walk. Students often walk to the main lodge for drinks or coffee or to the outdoor pool for a swim. |
A boardwalk runs thru the sand dunes at Asilomar and will take you to the ocean's sandy beach. Its relaxing to walk here, view the ocean, and maybe sit on one of the benches along the way and sip your coffee. |
The Monterey Wharf is only a short drive away, and you might enjoy a quick stop to see the shops. |
The view from the dining hall is wonderful, and a great place to view the birds, deer, and other wildlife. |
Asilomar's resident deer are fairly tame, and are visible during the day. |
The Monarch butterflies return to Pacific Grove in October. There is a parade celebrating their return. You can view them clinging to trees in the parks. |
